Method
  • Corpus: a state of The Greek Library earlier than Parousia (5,974 editions, 71,036,436 words), lemmatized in full by Sôtêr mini, whose lemma is correct for 91.8% of words, punctuation excluded, on the Universal Dependencies test set (Perseus).
  • Unit counted: the occurrence. Each word of the corpus counts once for its headword; letters used as numerals are left out.
  • Headwords: those of the LSJ. A word capitalized only because it begins a sentence is counted under its lower-case headword; proper nouns form a separate list, and their rank on the common scale is derived from their number of occurrences.
  • Levels A1 to C2: mere landmarks, by analogy with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (the 500, 1,500, 2,800, 5,000, 8,000 and 12,000 most frequent headwords), not a scale validated for Ancient Greek.
